I paid $500 plus equipment and travel costs for my daughter to play travel softball because SWCS did not offer softball in middle school. FYI Grove City has at least 3 travel softball teams. Let's see 12 players on each team times 3=36 girls and their families that are paying somebody else good money to play softball.
She played 7th grade basketball and had to return her basketball uniform last year. I paid for her warm up and her pictures. They did take the bus to away games, but the farthest they traveled was West Jeff. At home basketball games, everyone in my family ate at least 1 hot dog, a bag of chips and drank a soda ($5 x 6 people=$30). Plus we paid $3 each to walk into the gym ($3x6=$18). So my family alone spent $48 at every home game. There were 7 regular season home games and 5 other games where SWCS collected the same amount. That means my family alone spent $576 to watch her play during December and January.
There were 14 girls on the basketball team. So, if each girl's family spent the same as mine, SWCS made $8,064 for a 2 month basketball season just from the 7th grade girl's team. The 8th graders had roughly the same number of players, and there are 2 boys' teams that usually have a bigger turn out than the girls. If all 4 teams produced the same amount that is $32,256 generated for a 2 month season. This is just 1 middle school. Oh and then there are the cheerleaders whose families came to watch them. They had to eat and pay an entry fee too. I'm not sure how eliminating sports is saving money? Does anyone know how much is costs to keep a building open a few extra hours and to pay basketball Refs? I Guess gas, drivers, and food supplies cost money too...would love to see the P/L for this scenario.
